The Seven Wonders of Hannah (an exercise in non-rhyming verse)

The Seven Wonders of Hannah

The eyes–
to gaze with wonder at the world,
so bright outside the womb.

The ears–
to hear the mother singing of grace,
and the father reading with a split personality.

The nose–
to smell the mother near,
the perfume that permeates her robe.

The mouth–
to drink the milk, warm and comforting,
to taste the fruit, smooth and sweet.

The hand–
to clutch Momma’s hair,
dangling in midair.

The foot–
to grab with the hand,
in stretch and play.

The name–
backwards or forwards,
that’s spelled the same.
