Gone Boy

He’d been taken at two,
and every holiday,
his age-progressed image showed up
in the family portrait.
His empty shoes had been filled with “if only.”
When the day came that the last,
manufactured memory of him,
so prominent on their living room wall,
happened upon theirs,
they realized he’d outgrown those shoes.
