Poem-a-Day Writer’s Digest Challenge #17. Theme: Ode to a (Blank) or (Blank) is for the Birds

praline-563381_960_720.jpgMy initial idea was to do “Cold is for the Birds” (even though “for the birds” is a cliché), but then I realized, even the cold isn’t for the birds, for they fly south for the winter; so, I went with the reliable ode theme.

I like all kinds of chocolate, but in varying degrees (the higher the percentage of cacao, the better it tastes, peaking at the 85% mark), but white chocolate chips (which everyone throws into chocolate cookies because of the contrast, and is very annoying) and milk chocolate chips have no place in my cookies.

Ode to (Dark) Chocolate

The chocolatiest of all the chocolate—
great with lots of nuts or
a little bit of heat;
a slightly bitter companion to
sweet berries.
Like coffee,
from a little bean
sprouts something wonderful
for the palate and mind.
Dark is best,
for it takes so much less to satisfy.

    • Wow, thank you so much! It is a personal challenge, most definitely…I participated in the Poem-a-Day challenge in April, but with this one, there is the opportunity to have your poetry chapbook published by Writer’s Digest. 🙂
