Poem-a-Day April 2019 Writer’s Digest Challenge #7. Theme: Jealousy #aprpad

Jenvy

When Jealousy met Envy,
she met her match.
This two-headed, green-eyed monster
grew more luminous
when they learned that it was “Jenvy”
that brought about the first murder
on Earth,
which made them one of the 7 deadly sins.

But when they met Admiration,
that entity was the sword that slayed the dragon,
for a brother who was inspired
by another brother’s success
would become greater himself
than a brother who simply seethed
with Jenvy.

Poem-a-Day April 2018 Writer’s Digest Challenge #1. Theme: Secret

Samantha’s Bewitching Secret

She never sent him flowers,
but she thought him the orchid of Eden,
the rose of Miniver.
She never bought him candy,
but she thought him a transcendent trinity of
roman nougat, pecan divinity, and noir chocolate.
She never wrote him a love letter,
but she thought his words the gospel truth,
the poetry of Calliope.
She never wrote about him,
but in every man whose character
was a man of character,
he was there—
making him a man of innumerable incarnations.
Through three spring thaws,
and two winter frosts,
she was his secret admirer,
and he never even knew it.
